Even as the United States government continues to push for the use of more chemically-intensive and corporate-dominated farming methods such as GMOs and monoculture-based crops, the United Nations is once against sounding the alarm about the urgent need to return to (and develop) a more sustainable, natural and organic system.That was the key point of a new publication from the UN Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) titled“Trade and Environment Review 2013: Wake Up Before It’s Too Late,” which included contributions from more than 60 experts around the world.”

Frogtown Farm Master Plan 
I hate to break it to you, but the UN report does not say that small-scale organic farming is a way to feed the world. This has been widely misreported on. Please read the actual report. The report recommends increasing agricultural output on a local level in remote, rural areas of underdeveloped countries that rely heavily on imports from only a few sources of the supply chain. The purpose being, not to “feed the world” but rather to hedge against the risk of upsets to the supply causing massive price fluctuations which hit the most remote, poorest areas the hardest.

The bottom line is that much of organic farming not only produces 50-80% less crop yield (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/296/5573/1694), but it also uses toxic fungicides which have a detrimental effect on the local environment (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-505427/Thousands-tons-organic-food-produced-using-toxic-chemicals.html) and pose a greater risk to humans (http://www.uh.edu/~trdegreg/Copperfungicide.htm) than the latest targeted “synthesized” technology. Organic farming even has a larger carbon footprint (http://appliedmythology.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-shocking-carbon-footprint-of-compost.html) than conventional farming! It defies logic that the scientists contributing to this UN report would recommend this as the preferred method of feeding the world. And if you read the actual report, you will see that they don’t. If you read this article, you are led to believe that they do. So, this article is deeply flawed.
